Abstract:
We aimed to evaluate agroforestry potentialities of Mimosa caesalpinifolia Benth, Hardwickia binata Roxb. and Enterolobium cyclocarpum (Jacq.) Griseb in Senegal, so we studied characteristics and symbiotic potential of these three species. A collection of rhizobia strains was made from soil samples collected from in several areas in Senegal. These strains were isolated from nodules of M. caesalpinifolia and E. cyclocarpum. No nodule was obtained with H. binata. Strains were characterized with phenotypic tools and their hosts’ spectrum was studied. A cross inoculation group to which these three species could belong was found. Results showed a diversity of strains. All the strains isolated from M. caesalpinifolia have a fast growth. The strains isolated from E. cyclocarpum form two groups according to their speed of growth, a group with fast growth and a group with slow growth. Strains showed biotypes that tolerate high level NaCl in medium with a wide spectrum of antibiotics resistance and biotypes that are sensitive to NaCl and antibiotics. In terms of effectiveness of their symbiotic potential for nitrogen fixation, the strains are able to form nodules with their host plant and most of them formed nodules on Acacia albida, A. seyal and Leucaena leucocephala. None of strains is infective on Hardwickia binata. E. cyclocarpum and M. caesalpinifolia are in the same cross inoculation group with Pterocarpus erinaceus, A. albida, A. senegal, A. mangium, A. nilotica and Calliandra calothyrsus. Strains M2, 10a and E6 respectively have a very good potential of nitrogen fixation with M. caesalpinifolia Benth and E. cyclocarpum.
